Player Interview: Ryan Upson

Following on from the last lockdown we catchup with several players on life at the club

For those that don’t know, who have you played for previously?
Whittington St Peters FC as a youngster, then was picked up by Villa and was there for a couple of years. Released at 13 and played for Worcester City as a junior along with Nunnery Wood Colts. Then Worcester Uni while I was studying which I loved every minute of.
I took a little bit of time out of football before playing Sunday League Evesham Div 3 with TDMS then moved to Worcester City Reserves before joining the Vale at the end of the 18/19 season.

Favourite moment of your football career to date?
Tough because there’s been a few class moments but it has to be scoring an improvised overhead kick while in my fresher year at uni to win us the league.

How are you finding life at NDV?
Absolutely loving it at the Vale, have loved every minute since joining. Moving to NDV has been massive the club and can only see us progressing further.

Favourite moment so far at NDV?
Tewksbury Town win at home after coming from behind. Awful conditions but great game to play in.

Favourite game this season?
Tewksbury Town at home again (would have been even better if only the 40 yard chip hadn’t come off the bar) ?

Aims for the season?
Team - Win the league.
Personal - Hit double figures for both goals and assists.

Is there a certain pro player you try to base your game on and if so why?
Alvechurch skipper, keen historian and no nonsense centre half, Jamie Willets. That is all.

Footballing idol?
Alan Smith (Leeds, Man U, Newcastle) was my absolute idol as a kid being a massive Leeds fan, the bloke was so underrated.
But Thierry Henry is my favourite player of all time, closely followed by Pavel Nedved.

Superstitions if any?
Left sock, right sock, left shin pad, right shin pad, left tape, right tape, left boot, right boot. Every game, without fail.
